to George W. Bush
You're either with us or against us

Dear George W. Bush,

According to a June 2006 report by The Council of Europe, your government kidnapped around 100 people on European soil between 2001 and 2006 and transported them, via secret and illegal detention centers, to countries known to condone torture. Many of these people have reported horrific abuses suffered at the hands of their captors.

We abhor torture.

Are you with us or against us?

The fifth amendment of the United States Constitution states:

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

Your government deprives people of their liberty, without due process of law, at the detention center known as "Guantanamo Bay". You avoid justice because Guantanamo Bay is in Cuba, outside US jurisdiction.

We do not believe that the USA is in "a time of War or public danger" in the sense meant by the constitution. We respect and admire the US Constitution. We believe all persons are entitled to due process of law.

Are you with us or against us?

There are many countries in the world still struggling with injustice. It will most likely take hundreds of years for these countries to gradually evolve into peaceful democracies. In the meantime those countries who are democratic need not only to set examples and act as catalysts for change, but also to be constantly on their guard to protect their hard-won freedoms.

Your government has increasingly used non-democratic and unconstitutional means, ostensibly to achieve democratic ends. But means become ends, and if you use the same debased means as your enemy, you have jettisoned the very things you are fighting for.

The world needs the USA to stand up and be what it claims to be: a bastion of democracy, and champion of human rights.

You're either with us or against us.
