About openlettr

  • Openlettr lets you write an open letter to any public figure or group, be they leaders of nations, political parties, pop stars, rock groups, actors or anyone else well enough known to have their own Wikipedia page.

  • Openlettr is "reverse blogging". Instead of all communication being organized around the writer, all communication is organized around the recipient.

  • Openlettr is designed to highlight the letters that best express popular viewpoints, thereby increasing the chance that these letters will be viewed by the public figure or group to which they were written. It does this through a specially designed voting system.

  • Openlettr's unique voting system works as follows:

Anyone can vote for a letter.

Registered users have more voting power than casual visitors to the site.

Authors of letters have more voting power than ordinary registered users.

The more popular an author's letters are, the more voting power he or she gains.

Votes "decay" over time, to ensure that recently written and potentially more relevant letters can rapidly achieve higher visibility on the site.

In this way, votes accumulate to quality letters, those letters most likely to express a current popular view, and a view that the intended recipient would do well to take account of.

  • It is our hope that openlettr will be used as a new way for the general public to express their combined views to people with power to effect change.
